I believe that you will find an oval plate held on by two screws, behind which is the coupler that connects the two sections of the shift rod.

Remove the bottom screw from the coupler.

You may need to use the shift lever to apply enough pressure to release the coupler.

Also you have to remove the rear exhaust housing to get to the big bolt at the back of the motor. It goes through from the top and is hidden from view with the exhaust cover on.

Either will work. Usually you can move the shift lever to line it up.

When you put the screw back, be sure to line up the rod first so you don't lose the threads on that one as well. Those connectors are now listed at around $18. - without the screws.

Re: evinrude 40 hp 1964 impeller question

hello again
when you say its hidden do yo mean the long bolt at the back of the engine just above the prop? i had to take the cover off to get to it, ive taken the top bolt out of the gear shift but the rod is still stuck, do i just need to give it a good old yank to seprate? cos i have got it to drop about 2mm but wont go any more, i think its cause the gear shift is stuck:confused::confused:

See if you can spread the connector/coupler a little.

Do you mean the bolts holding the impeller housing on? Soak them with penetrating oil before trying to remove them and hopefully they'll come out.

yeah but they are flat head (or spade heads) which will make things harder if they wont shift

hello

just to let you know, all three screws sheared off, left them soaking all night but did'nt help,
still i've drilled and tap'd them all so good as new, the pump hausing was really clogged and the ends of each impellar fins were broken off and stuck in the pump, so on the bright side, its all clean'd and just waiting on the impellar kit to arrive, any other tips on what i should do when re-assembling?????

thanks for your help
cheers dan

I've had to drill and retap most of the impeller housing screws on my motors....they are a weak spot in the design, especially for a saltwater motor.

Make sure there is an o-ring/seal at the top of the driveshaft before re-inserting. Also, grease the splines at the top, but don't put any grease on the end of the driveshaft - just the splines.
