Disconnect the shift rod by pulling the clip from the shift shaft and arm assembly on the starboard side of the engine. Then, push the shift shaft and arm assembly to the center to release the shift rod.

Remove the 6 bolts connecting the gearcase to the exhaust housing (7 if you count the trim tab bolt)

Try not to turn the shift rod.

Mark the position of the trim tab so that you can put it back as it was.

It's considerably easier to see what you are doing if you remove the port side of the lower cowl before you start this work.

You might pick up a service manual. There are some lubricant requirements and some oring installation requirements as well as a particular way to install the key that drives the impeller.
