new to boating

I recently purchased a used boat with a 1998 50 hp Evinrude motor. The gentleman I purchased it from said that he mixed the oil with the fuel for peace of mind and it was unnecessary since it had a special reservoir. There is no owners manual to verify and I can't find a Chilton's manual to read through and get up to speed. Is this correct? I wanted to take my family out fishing before my deployment, but I don't want to become stranded either.

Thanks in advance.

Re: new to boating

Does it have a separate oil tank ???
Can you post the model number so we can all check it out. It should be on the port side of the transom bracket.

Re: new to boating

Leave the oil tank empty and add oil to the gasoline at a ratio of 50:1. That will give YOU peace of mind as well. The motor was designed to be "self-oiling", but if the oil tank and system have not been used all these years, they may very well not work now.

I personally had a problem with a VRO motor, and as luck would have it, a motorcycle I had at that very same time. In both cases, though, the systems deliverd too MUCH oil. Smoked like hell, but the motors survived. Switched to oil mix on both of them.
