Alright I have pumped all the gas out and removed a 8 1/2 deep, 23 wide, and 72 length inboard gas tank. There are small rust chips and something seems to be sliding around in there.
I have read the topics about cleaning it out.

1st question: The largest hole is the fuel gauge indicator. At 2" in diameter you can imagine I can't see much down there so can I be certain after I clean it theres not any major damage in there?

2nd question: When I unscrewed the copper outtake valve there is a seperate rusty pipe that draws the gas. Its over half way down the thread so the only way I can think of getting it out without blowin myself up is to fill it up with water and using some kind of drill bit to screw it on through and fish it out of the fuel indicator hole.(If it will even turn)
Anyone have a better idea?

3rd question: Does anyone know how many gallons this tank will hold with the dimensions I gave?

4rth question: Should I scrap it and spend 5 or 6 bills and get a new tank?

Re: inboard gas tank

Low,

Welcome to iboats. I will try to help.

1. Agree nearly impossible to see inside. Try an inspection mirror in the large hole and a light in a smaller hole.
2. I wouldn't bother. See 4. below.
3. Tank is about 40 gal.
4. Replace the tank. Newer Poly tanks are around $350.00.

If you don't want to replace the tank then take it to a certified tank cleaner and repairer and let them do the work. Reason being, since it is under the floor no sense in taking a chance something happens to it.

Good luck

If it's rusted enough (and a steel tank) to have chips floating around inside, just junk it. It's been and will continue to send bits of metal and rust through your engine.

Most replacement tanks are drop-in... they come with some fittings and senders, they're simple to install.

23x8.5x72 comes out to 14076 cubic inches, so 60.93 gallons minus whatever you have in material so you probably have close to 60 gallons...
