I have a 1978 Evinrude 115 HP, having problems blowing the solinoids for the power trim. Thinking about bypassing them (2EA resistors) with a switch. Any one think this is a bad idea.

Thanks for the help!!

suggest you check your wiring for wear and shorting. which solenoid are you using? that is a 3 wire tilt, and only uses one solenoid on the up wiring. if you have the control box with the 2 cube solenoids, you have the wrong box.

It has 2 solenoids in the junction box, were blown when I picked up the boat. The box has 2 wires to the trim motor one blue one green. Its on the rear side of the motor. I picked up the solenoids I replaced at NAPA. We had it running 2 weekends ago, trim and tilt. Ran the engine went to tilt up and it wouldn't work pulled the 2 solinoids and ran a ground and a positive wire to the two wires going to the trim/tilt jumped it and got it to go up but I don't want to be doing that on the lake. Just want to skip the dang auto switch with a different manual DPDT switch.

If it has two solenoids, it's not original equipment, but it's not a bad idea.

You have to have at least one solenoid because the run to the helm is too long for the light wiring.

You could use high amperage switches at the engine, but you should have them fused.

You could use a reversing solenoid and scrap the OEM wiring.

The fuse should have protected the solenoid in the original box.

Yeah got the plan to use a dual phaze dual throw momentary 3 position switch. Basic same idea as a solinoid, I will run in line fuses for both lead outs. When we started this project we knew we were about to re wire most of the boat, had no idea the motor was as rigged as the lights and pumps on the boat. Get used to seeing my name, I'll be here alot especially when we rebuild the hull.
