I just picked up a used motor, 1999 Johnson 25 horse with electric start.. took a while to get it started, but now that I actually got it going, the only way to keep it running is a little starter fluid in the carb. I checked the fuel line and the strainer/filter, and fuel came up to that when I squeezed the ball. so some how the carb is not getting fuel. I thought about taking the carb out and cleaning it and the jets to see if that helps. I can't get the carb off cause one if the nuts is behind the starter and I can't figure out how to get the starter off with out taking everything apart. Any ideas about the fuel problem? fuel pump? how do I know? thanks again

Give the carb a good clean. Get a manual.

Fuel pump gone south perhap, could be a plugged fuel screen behind the black cap on the pump. Pumping the bulb fills the carb, that should get it going. Pull the line going to the carb and place in a jerry can, get someone to spray the mix in and start it, observe the pump. Stop with the ether (starting fluid) no oil in it and will seize up your motor nicely. Mix some gas/oil in a spray bottle if you want to test. If all is pumping then carb is the issue.

Is there not a primer on that motor?

yes there is a choke on it.. i believe.. or is it a primer..hah..it think its a primer the more I look it at. I didn't run it much with the starting fluid for that reason.. I checked the screen it all is clear.. i will try the process of pulling the fuel line.. the ball on teh fuel line sometimes gets hard... but not like my other motor.. i wonder if it could simply be that.. thanks

you have to remove the complete starter bracket, a bolt above the carbs, 3 bolts portside, and the bracket that holds the throttle linkage. then you can get to the carb nut.

Well motor runs great now! new gas tank made a huge difference, cleaned out the carbs, and all the fuel lines and primer lines, runs like a top now. My question is the end of the carb is wide open, is there supposed to be a filter for it or a cover of some kind.. or is it supposed to be just wide open.. makes me wonder, I just got the motor so not sure..thanks for the help!

That's perfectly normal. My 1981 j25hp has the air silencer box you're referring to. They decided to eliminate it in the later motors.
