Just curious, 5 hp mercury, is it a nissan??

I have a 2000 (maybe a tiny bit older, but that is what I was told) 5 hp mercury. It (besides being a different color) looks like an identical twin to a 5 hp nissan I have here. The mercury needs a tune up. Mercury parts a more pricy for me to order than nissan.

Does anyone know for sure if these motors are the same with different paint and badges?

I believe they are both actually Tohatsu's with some minor differences.

I have a 4HP 4 stroke Nissan and the ONLY difference is the name on the tank. I think mines an 05 and yes they're made by Tohatsu. The smaller 4 strokes, anyway. The 4,5,and 6hp are all pretty much the same motor. all look the same, all 123 cc, all weigh about the same. I really don't know what makes one a 4hp and the other a 6hp. I'm sure there are a lot of people on this forum who do know. I put a Mercury tank (internal) in my Nissan last spring. I always used a remote tank but a friend was going to use it for a day to take his grand kids fishing and all he needed was the little tank. Broken He took the remote and I ordered a tank from my merc dealer. Same tank. Dropped right in.

All Mercurys under 30hp are Tohatsu's/Nissans been that way for year even the 2 stroke where this way

So, what besides the Verado's are built by Mercury? As I understand it, the mid range Merc's are Yamaha's.

According to the info the I got, Yamaha never actually built a Merc but Yamaha did help to design them. I've heard conflicting rumours about that but nothing to confirm them. Merc and Yamaha had a blowout in 2006 but I also understand that relations were restored and Yamaha continues to work with Merc in the design phase today.

Tohatsu, has been supplying nearly every manufacturer with the small engine classes for years now. Each manufacturer adds a little here and there to make some components unique but for the most part they are still Tohatsu's at heart.

Thanks for the info guys. So I guess Nissan/tohatsu parts should work then....
