Just joined as I'm working on an inherited 35 hp merc outboard non-tiller. I'm not exactly sure on the year, but the serial number is OA966391.
This boat hasn't been in the water for over 5 years and never by me.
I've gone through and cleaned the carb, fuel lines and filter and cleaned up all electrical connections.
Next, I planned on changing the impeller but ran into the following that I'd like some input on prior to proceeding.
Shifts fine into reverse, prop doesn't rotate either direction, or at least has significant resistance.
When shifted into forward, there is a ticking noise while spinning the prop clockwise, sounds like its coming from lower gear housing. I can visibly see the shift shaft assembly (43) rotating while shifting into and out of gears.
Is this "clicking" and free spinning normal? If not, can you clue me in on some potential causes before I get in too far?
Thanks in advance!!
