Forgive me please... I've been searching for parts/tools in my garage all day, so I'm trying to avoid anymore digging today.

How's it labeled{name/brand}? Whats it do/purpose? Where do you buy it? Would it be needed under rustoleum primer with a top coat of rustoleum paint{btw, bare aluminum now}? Any help at all would be appreciated! Thanks

Good luck finding it... It is usually applied via electroplating... if you get a primer labeled for use on aluminum you will be fine...

ZC is the yellow coating you see on hardware, it is a popular thing to have done to under hood metal items on European cars (original hardware / pipes / other metal bits were zinc plated when our cars were assembled, and it does look good when everything is done)

You should be fine with rustoleum, BUT could go overboard and get some Zinc Chromate Epoxy primer (2 part, mix, paint, let dry) if you REALLY wanted to, but the rustoleum should be cheaper and easier to use!

Got mine at local boat store. Mar Pro zinc chromate, about $8/can.

Seems like it and rustoleum primer is overkill.

Re: Zinc chromate?

Hi:
I have a rattle can of "Scepter" brand zinc chromate in front of me. I Googled it and found the following:

http://www.moellermarine.com/aftermarket/marine_paints/primers/

The Scepter product is probably a Moeller brand for Canada and it cost $CAD10.99 retail.

I painted my outdrive by scuffing the good factory black paint, fine sanding the raw areas, Spraying with 50% white vinegar, rinsing with water and shooting 2 coats of ZC followed by 2 coats of the Canadian equivalent of Rustoleum. Great job, simple, easy and long lasting.

I hope this helps:

Depending on local regulations you may be able to find it at a good auto parts store. I've also seen it at west marine.

ZC is the "original" aluminum primer. I haven't seen anything that works better so far... I've even tried some expensive SEM self-etching primers and they don't work as well as ZC.

Do you still need to alodine aluminum before applying ZC primer?

If you are dealing with bare metal yes alodine is the preferred but a vinegar wash will substitute.
