New here, so forgive my ignorance if this isn't the right place to post.

I've read the threads I found and understand that switching from long shaft to short shaft involves swapping out three parts, the hardest and most expensive of which is the driveshaft. I'm unsure of the year of my engine and it is at the shop now so I can't get the serial no. but I believe it to be aroung 1980 or so. Anyone here know of a good sourcefor used driveshaft or want to swap parts?

Thanks

oh yeah. I want to convert my long shaft to a short one in case I wasn't clear.

i'm sure someone will reply to this by saying "All you need is the driveshaft." Does the water tube have an extension on it? If not it can be cut the length as long as you know the correct length. Same for the shift rod, you can find out how long the regular short shaft is to the notch and cut to size.

Thanks, thats my understanding from talking to the shop and doing my own research online. I got a good deal on the engine, and know a little about engines from working on older BMW motorcycles, so I thought I could get it going. I tried a bit, and got it going to the point where it backfired, but I exhausted my skills.

So, I never got around to taking it apart more to see what the internals of the shaft looked like. From what I read here, its easy enough to do modify the other parts, but cutting and rewelding a driveshaft is another deal. I've got a friend who is a really good welder, but the place I took the engine to said I'd be better off finding a used or new short shaft driveshaft for the engine.

I know people are often looking to convert their short shaft to a long shaft, so I was hoping I could swap parts and keep everyone out of the retail loop...or at least find a used part for me to use:)

Yea, there's no need to cut the drive shaft. Chances are, welding it won't ensure it's straightness.
