Pulled the 350 v8 today It has the OMC 800 drive of which i'm changing to a Mecruiser set up. The OMC has the cross member tilt front mount. Could i use this front mount with the Mercruiser set up or do i need to use the side engine mounts?

Re: Question on drive change over?

I guess my question is can the Mercruiser Transom mount can handle the torque when the engine only has a front center mount? Or should i do the side mounts? thanks

Nope,... That mount is useless to you,...
It would really screw up the alignment being a moveable Hyd, mount..
Actually,..
Your going to have Serious fitment all the way around if you try to shoehorn that OMC in there with the Merc. drive..
Exhaust diameters, etc...

Re: Question on drive change over?

I'm putting the complete Merc transom assy in exhaust tube merc manifolds etc. everything will be merc except can i use the omc front cross mount and do away with the trim on it and make it a stud and nuts manual adjustment for alignment? Will the merc transom handle the torque (twist) of the engine if it's front mounted?

Well i guess when they repowered this thing in 1985 they chiseled out a large section of stringer where the normal mounts would sit and the other side the most stringer is missing. I guess i will just re-stringer it like it should be. I wasn't going to use it as a tilt mount just make it a manual up/dn adjustable.

Re: Question on drive change over?

Well, The stringers are hollow boxed in fiberglass. The chiseled part i saw was a sister stringer one the inboard side of the original stringers port side. It was bolted to the original stringer. I removed it so now i have the regular boat stringers. However, the is a rectangle section cut out of the stringers right where the engine mounts would sit. I can reglass it in. My question now is how do you lag your mounts to maybe a 3/16 hollow fiberglass stringer? Doesnt seem like they would hold to well. Should i put wood stalk inside them or?

Absolutely...

With Bobby's Superbarge, the stringers are 3/4" plywood, covered in glass...
His off-shore mounts, Thru-bolt the stringers...

Using lag bolt mounts, you need a block of wood laminated in to get some Bite...

The stringers in my Atlantis are laminated 3/4" plywood,+ glass...
The old stringer drive mounts were boiled white oak, laminated to the hull, just inside the stringers/ motorbox...
I should go out,+ pop off a few shots for ya tomorrow...I'll send you the pictures later...
My hull is lain out in sorta a Monique fashion,.. The stringers,+ bulkheads are sorta irregular shaped egg crates..
The stringers are Non-continuous from the transom forward...

Re: Question on drive change over?

You are going to have to make the transom thicker too. The stringers were like 1" to 1-1/4" and didn't have to support anything. The Mercruiser (and all other transoms for IO's must be thicker. They are what supports everything, unlike the stringers.

Up in the adults only sticky you will find some installation manuals for Mercruiser, might want to download them and go over what you are going to need.

Re: Question on drive change over?

Yes Don i used them last year to redo my SS-215 transom and installed the Cobra in place of the OMC stringer. The transom needs to be 2-21/4 thick so i went with 2/1/8 and it worked good. I just need to beef up the engine beds now where their just hollow boxed F/G i'm going to sandwich some oak to the existing beds through bolt and resin it together should work ok. Thanks

Re: Question on drive change over?

When I changed from a 165 to a V6, my fibreglass guy made the side mounts from a block of Jarrah. Cut them to the right size and used body filler to 'glue' them to the bottom of the hull. Then he cut sheets of glass fibre and enclosed them with it. Strong as you like... The Jarrahs doesn't rot either and it as hard as steel.
