I have been doing a minor restore on an '89 sea ray 200 bow rider and found rotten wood while working today. I used a screwdriver to pry at the glass after felling a crunch when I stepped into the ski storage compartment. The wood is soft and I found wet foam underneath. Is this able to be reasonably repaired? Thanks

If thats the only place you found rot, shouldn't be too bad. How's the rest of the deck? How far does that soft wood travel up the ski locker?

Re: Rotten wood in ski storage....

Thanks for the fast replies. The entire floor has been replaced and transom was rebuilt as well. I couldnt find any rot any where else on the boat prior to purchase and the hull seems solid as a rock. I did try to see if there was soft spots forward of the area I found but it appears to be "somewhat" isolated. can i just cut out the area? Does this area serve any significant structural importance? Thanks

Well thats good at least..then this should be an easy repair..Just cut out the area until you reach good wood. In the first picture it looks like there is a small hole cut forward of the bad spot? Is that what I'm seeing? Is that suppose to be there? In my boat, there is a limber hole at the rear of the ski locker to drain water into the fuel tank compartment and then back to the bilge.

Since the area you cut out, likely won't have any support under it, you might consider trying to cut it out at an angle, so when you put the new wood back in, it won't fall through. Use PL or 5200 to glue all of the seams together, throw some Poly Resin and fiberglass over it all and call it good. Should be pretty simple.

Thanks. The ski storage had 3 nickle sized holes that appear to drilled and filled. They were all down the center but oddly spaced. The furthest to the rear was where the rot had formed. Maybe someone took core samples prior to my ownership. And yes there is a drain towards the rear of the ski compartment. Im just going to start CAREFULLY cutting and see what i find.

Re: Rotten wood in ski storage....

Hello all I have a question . After a day at the lake when we pull the drain how much water shoud come out ? Is like I would say 5 cups maybe be to much . I am a little worried . we purchased this boat last week a 1993 bayliner inboard/outboard motor. Have had issues they are fixing as it is under warranty . I saw water in ski locker when we got it and it rained really hard that week Assumed it all came from there. We went on the lake all day today.:) Not much water in ski locker area. Looks like just from getting in the boat and out. Just a little concerned over so much water coming out when he pulled the plug . He tells me it is normal . ( my husband ) been lurking :D for weeks .. I love this forum.

Thanks all!!!!!!!!!!

HI Cheryl1013, glad you found this site. I would recommend reposting your question in a new thread of your own, not in someone else's.

The 3 holes may have been for pouring in the foam mixture. The 2 part foam is usually poured into small holes into a cavity or compartment. Hopefully, they saved the core and resined it into place, thus sealing the hole from water intrusion.

I am replacing the floor on a 1992 Celebrity190 bowrider and when I ripped out the carpet, the holes for the foam were left open and you could see the foam. The foam was waterlogged and the floor was rotten to the core.

Good luck.

Re: Rotten wood in ski storage....

Just be careful cutting that area out since it is probably only 2-4" above the bottom of the hull...some boats have a short stringer in that area to support the floor of the ski locker...I just repaired some rot in the bulkhead in front of the gas tank on my 88 FW...I would have cut the whole thing out but since it's right in front of the tank...I cut out all the bad wood and scarfed in another piece of 3/4 in plywood and glassed it in good. And I did find similar holes for the injected foam...all left open...
