Hey guys. Chet here. What a cool site/forum. I wish I had found this long ago. I am going to be replacing the plywood seats on my trusty old Lund. I am looking for an alternative to marine grade plywood which is a tad too rich for my blood (actually to rich for my wife's blood, but I won't get into that in my first post). Any suggestions as to what I can use? Secondly, should I use a marine grade spar varnish to finish them? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard Chet,...
I use construction grades of plywood myself,...
Properly sealed, it'll hold up just as long as the Marine grades, for Way less money...
For seats, you might want ACX, or BCX vs. CDX...

Welcome to iboats.

I might add one more tidbit...... do not use PT plywwod which will react with aluminum. ;)

Thanks for the quick replies. I was hoping to see that some BCX would be sufficient.

For what it is worth, I got the old seats removed and the new ones cut. It seems to me it would be easiest to finish them before I reinstall them. I am thinking of using an a semi-gloss spar varnish. Thoughts?

Here's my experience...

My buddy used spar varnish on his Lund's boat seat plywood and within a couple years (3-4?) it was cracking and peeling. We scraped it down and slapped on another coat, in disgust... On my jon boat seat plywood I used oil based polyurethane and it's been fine for 3 years, no cracking or peeling.
