70 Johnson-Unknown Alarm

Just mounted a new to me 1994 Johnson 70 (J70TLRV).

Unfortuneately, I do not have the owners manual or the correct year shop manual-yet.

I get an alarm while at idle. It is not the constant "Hot" horn. I have tested that, it is a constant tone and is working.

It is a : Buzz------Buzz-----Buzz-----Buzz. Fairly long on the "buzz".

The oil injection is disconnected, plumbing and electrical.

Is this a fuel restriction alarm?

Ideas.

Additional info:

This alarm does not sound until the engine has been idling for about 90 seconds to two minutes.

No fuel restriction alarm this engine. Check the oil tank alarm. If not this, and system has OEM alarm horn, the self test logic on the horn is bad or wiring. We are talking about one alarm horn right?

Thanks Clanton.

I did not tank the oil tank from the donor boat, or the controls. The controls are from a 1989-60 HP (3 cyl.) Should be the same--right?

Did I forget to unhook something?

BTW, the alarm seems to go away if I squeeze the primer bulb. THat may be coincedence.

The control should work, but if the horn is inside the control, horn is bad, or wiring. I would make sure the wires from the pump and tank are unpluged at the engine, tape the ends, and check all the tan wires for ground. This engine may have S.L.O.W. which have a tan wire to the power pack. Unplug the wire at the pack . All of the tan wires are spliced together on the engine harness into 1 tan wire going farward to the control. All af the ignition parts mounted , and grounded to a bracket inturn bolted to block. Some times the bracket to block bolts get loose. loosing ground causing ignition and alarm problems.

Recheck the wire to oil tank sensor, sometimes the wire is just cut and left to dangel and short to self or block.

I just left Phoinex.

Geez Clanton, I live three miles from Mesa.:D  I can just about bet what area you were in. Somewhere in the neighborhood between US 60 and University, probably off of Greenfield. If not, further East?

Kris,

First off-Welcome!

For best and quickest responses it's best to start your own topic. While the systems are similar, there may be enough diference to confuse would be responders.

I do not believe your engine has SLOW. Not sure. SLOW is essentially a system that limits the engine power in an attempt to protect it should you have-overheat, low oil, no oil, etc.

Good luck with your new post.

Kris,

Repost can`t find posts. Most likely cause of your problem is the horn inside the control box.

Re: 70 Johnson-Unknown Alarm

I still get: Beep----Beep----Beep-----Beep. About 4-5 seconds apart.

The ONLY way to stop it is to pump the primer bulb?

Lost.

1. All of the oil injection system is gone. Wires removed/loose ends sealed.

2. Oil injection port sealed.

The manual says that is a "low oil warning". Yea, I know that but warning low oil on what?

Ideas?

I received an idea that it was a warning horn issue. I was advised to buy a #12 horn from Radio Shack. They had NO CLUE what a #12 was.

Is this a defective horn?

The engine is NOT overheating. Heat alarm works fine.

I have disconnected ALL SLOW items including the tan wire to the power pack.

If everything points to a defective horn, I'll get the OEM part.

The OEM manual leaves a bit to be desired, in this troubleshooting area.

Thanks, in advance, for the help.

Is this only happening at idle? If you give it a little throttle does it go away or become more frequent? Is this a self test (3 wire) horn?

Engine speed make no difference. Yes, three wire.

This engine is hooked to a 1989 control box.
