We have a 1971 johnson that has been sitting in the garage for years and years .It has very low hours on it.
We were hoping to get it up and running for this boating season .

What should be done first ? I am a little challenged when it comes to motors and maintence .Are there things that must be replaced, etc........

I've heard horror stories about people destroying a motor that was sitting just by trying to run the motor.

Please help .
Thanks In Advance

Main thing is to change the water pump impeller. They are rubber and will come to pieces and end up in the motor.
Impeller is Sierra 18-3001
Available here it iboats, along with most of the common repair items

I'd also try to get some lubricant in the cylinders by taking out the spark plugs and spraying some lubricant in the cylinders. The motor rotates clockwise, by the way.

Good posts so far. I would only add... laying it down so the plug holes are facing up and squirting some oil right into the cylinders. Sounds as though they will be very dry by now. Great little motor you have there. Best of luck. Rick.
