Why the change? If you do change you will have to rejet the Rochester carb and while its open might as well get a rebuild kit.

Well with my experience w/ the merc carb it is junk!I would like to try the rochester for more reliability not sure if the rochester will provide this but worth a try and it would be a given to rebuild it out of the gate to get what I'm looking for out of it. jut wnating to make sure it's compatable before I commit without changing the mani

Re: carb interchangabilty?

I used a rochester carb all last season. 3.0lx 1996 seemed ok i ran a little rich last season and had other mechanical issues at the end of the season -but no complaints from the carb department.
as fars the model it was from a company from ebay. They told me that the compatibility was a non issue. I just use the correct gasket for rochester . The jets may have been off abit but like the other guy said you can change that if u need , I guess. Im no expert though. btw the oem carb is like 650 buckaroos new:eek:

It did and does at times run great but experiences a rich running condition and everthing is set to factory specs. I guess my curiousity is getting to me to see if the rochester will perform and be less of a hastle!

Re: carb interchangabilty?

May I suggest the problem with the Mercarb is not the carb, but the way it's been set up... My experience is that they are good and very reliable carbs.... Any carb mistreated will act up... even a Rochy...

I do not mistreat any of my equipment for one and 2 I set it to the specs I downloaded from the merc service manual so kindly provided by DonS. I have rebuilt numerous carbs in my life and have yet to be able to figure out the inconsistant rich condition that this one has from time to time. I will not give up on this just yet but whats the harm in trying something different after all it is my boat!. And ACHRIS I have read numerous posts of yours and the assistance you have offered others in the past and I commend you on your profound knowledge but I would suggest in the future to pick your words a little more constructivly and thanx for the advise.

My apologies for using 'inappropriate language'. The use of 'mistreated' was not meant as an insult to you, merely as a way of saying it may have been set up incorrectly. And I said that because I have no knowledge of your previous mechanical endeavors. These forums are populated with people who have so little knowledge as to not know the difference between an ignition coil and a distributor cap and those who have been doing nothing else for the last 50 years, and everybody in-between.

Please accept my apology if I have offended you... that was never my intent.

Amazed at how someone that intetionally picked and uses the user name Fat Fanny is really really sensitive, especially when getting $100USD an hour free advice.
