I have a 1987 Mariner 25hp. I have a very similar issue as this guy:
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=128446

Rebuilt the carb and it wont stay running for more than a minute without being choked. Taken it off twice and cleaned real good with carb cleaner and air. Replaced all fuel lines and filters. Also changed plugs.

The picture is my carb however I have an extra gasket between the pump body and the diaphragm. My question(s):

1. Should I take the extra gasket out like in the picture?

2. If I keep the extra gasket, does it go in spot 1 or spot 2?

Any suggestions appreciated!

Re: 25hp Mariner Carb Question

When you buy these kits they come with the gaskets and parts for all the carbs variations and year models of that style of carb. When you use what you need, and only what you need there will be parts left over. The gasket you have around the diaphram can be removed. More than likely it's causing the diaphram not to function like it should. Also, make sure you have the gasket between the carb and powerhead installed right. It has to be in EXACT right spot to work properly. There is a hole in that gasket to allow suction from the crankcase the pull on the fuel pump diaphram and if the gasket it installed bakwards/upside down, or what have you it will not operate.

I'll be darned... it was the gasket between the head and the carb. On the bottom left of the gasket I just had a small hole, not a long skinny hole (which was covering the opening to the crankcase). Runs like a champ now... Thanks!

No problem....I did all the above and ended up taking mine to the shop, imagine how I felt when they told me that I had the gasket upside down. I'm all about saving a fellow boater some hard earned money.....boating is expensive enough as it is.
