I was just going over the Mercury service manual for kicks and noticed something. Under the drive housing service section it states that the drive shaft should have a pre load pin in the top of it? By all reference my drive is an Alpha 1(r) but it does not have this pin, and hasnt had if since Ive owned it. The hole is there, although its full of grease and doesnt seem that deep. Should my drive have this pin? Thanks.

The R drive was only used in 83 and 84, 85 was the MR, 86-90 was the Alpha I.
Only the R used the pin, but you shouldn't have an R being an 88.

Thanks, Im probably wrong, Im pretty sure your right and my drive is an MR. Seems that if Im given time to dwell before I can test work I've done (new impeller, too early in the season) I doubt and second-guess myself into a panic, lol.

You aren't calling it an R because there is a R stamped on the side of the drive are you? If so, that is not what that R stands for.

I had some work done on the drive a few years back and I thought the paperwork refered to it as an Alpha 1 R. However.... that was a few years ago and well, sometimes these things are confused over time. Think Im gonna have to refresh my memory on this one.
