Water tube troubles

Re: '76 Johnson, 85 h.p. cooling system.

Installed new impeller in used housing--no problemo.

Inspection of water tubes shows tubes to be loose with the copper guides distorted, ragged, out of round. Several attempts to install lower unit were unsuccessful. Tried alignment with the replaced pump housing top. The tubes will not stay aligned long enough to get both tubes inserted in the pump.

Are the copper guides replaceable?

I have considered putting some plastic sleeves in the guide tubes to help keep things lined up; but do not want to take a chance on restriction.

Is this a closed system? It sure seems to have a lot of leak opportunities.

Is the looseness of the tubes at the top a concern?

Is the cavity around the tubes filled with water under normal operation?

Any pointers are appreciated greatly.

Sincerely,

Re: Water tube troubles

The guides on my motors were not copper. Part numbers are 314765 (long) and 314081 (short). The short ones are available from any BRP/Evinrude authorized dealer - you may have to contact sea-way.com to find the longer ones.

The midsection cavity fills with water under normal operation.

One watertube sends water to the engine, some of the warmed water returns through the second tube.

Re: Water tube troubles

There are normally two guides as Zeke has stated above, both being made of nylon. These guides usually find their way up the water tubes due to vibration and attach themselves with salt corrosion etc. It becomes a case of if they appear to be missing, look closely up the tubes, then yank them down with some sort of hooking tool.

As Zeke states, one guide is slightly longer than the other.

Whether your guides are nylon of home made of some other material, the install procedure is the same......... Use some sort of sticky sealer to temporarily hold them in the water pump. As the lower unit is raised up, align the tube having the longest guide, then the shorter one. Let us know how you make out.
