I have a Suzuki DT40 that has been sitting for months. I recently(6 months ago) had the motor gone over including changing the lower end grease. I run it with rabbit ears monthly. the last two months, and today it started right away and ran fine. The motor sits upright on the boat and out side. I live in northern WA state(where it gets quite cold)
In the first couple minutes a couple ounces of green grease came oozing out from the area behind the prop nut.
I noticed no water was comming from the upper exhaust port and shut it down.
After cleaning the grease away and putting the ears on better(they were real loose) I started the motor and it ran fine for 20 minutes with no more grease appearing.
Need I worry?

When was the last time the water pump impeller was changed? Was there a good stream of water coming out of the tell tale when you ran it the second time?

The grease is probably just excess coming from behind the prop..if it looked fresh then it was probably from the last servicing.

The impeller is good Senior and the 2nd time there was a good water stream . And the grease was fresh. Perhaps I should run it more often?
Thank You

Running it more often wont hurt but once per month is fine. I'd say not to worry about it.

Cheers

Maybe pull prop and see what's back there just to be sure. My guess is that the last guy that put your prop on over-greased the prop shaft splines and when he slid the prop on all that grease ended up in the front of the prop, just waiting to ooz out when you ran motor.

My 1983 DT-50 exhausts through the prop, when I run it on muffs I sometime get a mixture of gas/oil/water/exhaust around and behind the prop. This is not as thick as grease but heaver than mix.

You might want to consider pulling the prop and inspect for fishing line, do you recall if when the lower unit was last serviced the prop shaft seals were replaced ? If not may you want to dig deeper, it could save you money in the long run. I wished I had done mine sooner, I am now in the process of trying to locate a replacement lower unit for mine. But that's another post in itself.

Good luck
