Manuals and Advice, sought Mercury 1500

Purchased a 30' toon with a 80ish(?) Mercury 1500 (150 HP?) O/B with tilt/trim. The situation is that the engine had a new block installed 4 years ago and the lower end gone through. (Have reciepts from Marina that did the work.)

The owner died and the boat has been sitting every since. Accourding to the Marina paperwork and the current reading on the hour meter the new block has 11.3 hours on it. It was winterised and a (not great) canvas cover put over it. I suspect its gong to need a bit of work. I am an I/O guy and haven't touched an O/B engine in years and even back then they were more in the 10 to 40 HP range than any thing like this.

Need advice on where to begin and the steps I should go through to see if I can get the old girl running. Also, is it too old to spend a few bucks on? I don't want to sink a ton of money in it if it's a very low value engine or if I start approaching say half the cost of something newer.

Can a guy get a manual for this yet? Anyone by any chance have a link for something on line I can down load?

Finally, were these good engines? Durable, perfomed well, etc. ?

The last inline six Merc 1500 was made in 1977. It has battery-driven-distributor ignition and three carbs. I recommend you clean up the carbs, and install new gaskets. Inspect the floats and inlet needles and seats. If it all looks good, reinstall everything, and search up the "Timing and Synch of Merc Inlines" post on this forum. This post will tell you (with a timing light) if the timing is correct. Change the gear oil, as well as grease the zerc fittings. Now install a battery and run it on fresh 50::1 gas oil mix and see how it works.

The engine has a stator charging system. Don't expect it to put out 60-70 amps like an IO alternator does though, these things are good for 15-20 amps and that's about it.
As far as a manual goes, i'll take a look because I have a ton of OB manuals, but I'm guessing not for 1 that old. Any chance you have a serial number?

No no way to add an alternator. I'll run your serial when I get home later and see if I have a manual on my laptop.
95% of all outboards run stator/flywheel charging systems. Strong enough to charge the battery and maybe run 1 or 2 accessories. It's not untill you get into the newer Optimax 2 strokes, the newer 4stroke OB's that they have actual alternators on them.

More like 9 Amp on these old L6 engines...

SN is 478167
Missing a number ??

If it's 4781670 then it's a 1977 model
( 4602012 through 4868997 = 1977 )

Title says its a 79 but you know how that goes... I'll check the plate on the engine and see if its different.
Last inline 6 150hp was produced in 1977, there was a 155hp inline 6 engine in 1978 but this was the 1500XS ( short shaft + 155hp + red decals )

9 amps??? No gigawatt stereo then. :(
Nope... unless you got a loooong extension cord...

I found an operator/maintenance manual for my 1980 merc 9.8 in PDF. heres the link: www.brunswickmarineemea.com/download. They have operator manuals for just about any mercury ever made, they should have yours or whatever model is most similar, their basic info manuals but better than nothin.
