What Starter Battery?

I had a dead battery today and could not get a direct replacement at the local store. The motor is a Mercury 2004 XR6 150. Where can I find the range of amps that the starter motor (and altinator can handle)? The closest battery to the old one is:

- 625 marine cranking amps (32 deg F)
- 500 cold cranking ampls (0 deg F)
- 120 reserve capacity

I am thinking the above will work, but how do I know for sure? I don't want to overload the starter motor.

Thanks,
Steve

Re: What Starter Battery?

Starting current is only about 150 amps. Any group 24 marine starting battery, and most larger deep cycle or dual purpose batteries will work fine. I've seen a bigger engine than that started with a lawn mower battery in a race boat.

Too big a battery won't hurt the starting motor. The opposite is true. Not enough capacity will burn out the starter.

That engine should have a regulated charging system on it, probably a dual regulator 40 amp. It'll adapt to any ordinary battery.

hope it helps
John
