Re: Mercruiser 140 Overheated

Purchase made. Wish me luck!!!!! Now I just need to finish checking the manifold and need new gaskets for that. The plug wires should also be replaced. Where do you get yours from? Is there anything that I should put in the cylinders to protect them while the head is off? WD40 maybe? Or just straight motor oil?

One of the very few things wd 40 is good for is preserving blocks, spray the hell out of the cylinders and all should be ok as long as you don't turn engine.

I knew there was no way on earth your problem was a head gasket. Too much water, and the longer is stays in the cylinder the worse the outcome.

I would wish you luck, but you beat me to that head by 5 minutes. That is what I get for emailing the seller to confirm the casting number.

Spray the cylinders with some WD-40 and keep it dry. You should be fine.

Oh well, others are out theres.. Good luck... really! :)

Re: Mercruiser 140 Overheated

Thanks to everyone for all of the advice. I just got the last gasket in the mail today and cranked it up. It sounds great!!!!!! Any tips on adjusting the rocker arms? Got it warmed up and pulled the valve cover to adjust them and I cant tell when it clatters or not and I got oil everywhere. Good news is it starts with no problem whatsoever and has no leaks. Wooo Hoooooo!!!!!!!!!!

did you adjust them accordingly before starting it???

start, let idle. after warm loosen nut till clatters, slowly tighten till clatter stops...this is 0 tolerance.....tighten 1/4 turn, wait 10 seconds or so to let engine catch up. do this 3 times for total of 3/4 turn past zero.

repeat on each. may need to run and readjust a second time.

btw....download the real manual out of the adult only section....

glad its running. finish her up and have fun.....34 degrees and snowing here :(

Ok found the chapter that covers valve adjustment. I guess I did it *** backwards. I will start again tommorrow. Sorry about the weather up there. I am hoping if everything goes well I will be on the lake this weekend. :) Everything seems to be running fine

Re: Mercruiser 140 Overheated

For some reason it is not letting me start a new thread so I will post this to all of you who have helped me before. I had a great time on the lake with my boat until about 3 weeks ago I hydroplaned my truck on the way back form the lake. I was able to save the truck and noone was hurt but the boat came off of the trailer and took a good hit on the left bow and will no longer be a boat. I just purchased an 88 galaxy cheap that has a blown 3.0 in it. It started its life as a 170. Figured I would swap my good running engine. Im sure you all know this but it wont fit. So now Im trying to swap the transom plate and gimbal housing from my old boat so that the motor will fit. Is that possible to do? I have alredy swapped the bell housing on the outdrive with the newer one since the wrecker driver cracked my old one only problem was the water intake hose and I got it to fit. Havent put the upper on it yet but it looks like the same pattern. Can I use the lower unit from the newer 170 because the lower from the 140 broke one of the horizonatl fins off. I guess the last question is what problems will I have with electrical and steering or any other problems you foresee. Thanks for the help
