I have a 2001 mercury 115 hp elpt. I was wondering if the drain plug and vent plug are suppose to have o-rings on them? Neither one of mine have one.

So. when you changed the gear lube, was there water in the lower end. I believe they use fiber washers as opposed to o-rings. Alot of time those fiber washers get mashed to the lower unit and you have to scrape them off. .02

The washer should be replaced each time you remove the screw. If you don't, often they will displace sideways and leak or even totally fall out.

Re: lower unit plugs

Last fall, the fiber washer came out with my vent screw but the drain washer was stuck in place. Had to blindly scrape it out of there because it was tough to see. If I hadn't been the last one to replace it, I might have questioned whether it was there or not too.

They are known to stick inside the hole..a very small screwdriver pops them out.
They are a blue crush gasket type fiber o-ring.
Like the guys said, replace at every drive service.

About 90 cents each at any boat dealer...
