If you HAVE to run it in the boat, you should treat it with fuel additives that treat for water/ethanol and octane, among other things. Top off the tank w/ fresh gas and have water separator filters ready. Discard 1-2 no matter what!

If you can get rid of it, ask mechanics, repair shops and/or county disposal offices about where and HOW to get rid of it, but I'd run it in any basic engine around the yard. Someone can get it out.

My surveyor friend thinks you are 'probably ok', based on his experience over the years... but you have to do the above.

Re: 2 yr old gas

Gasoline will stay fresh for about 30-45 days on it's own. With stabilizer it will last about a year. Beyond that forget it.

I just helped recommission a friends boat that had been sitting for about three years in a climate control building. The tank had about 30 gals of gas in it. No way in hell would I let him try to run that boat with that gas. We pumped out the old gas (the gas was super nasty and smelled like turpentine) through the sending unit in to 5 gal cans and disposed of it at the county recycling center. Most have disposal for gas, oil and anitfreeze. I removed the carb and rebuilt it. The inside of the carb didn't look too bad at first but after soaking it in clean carb dip the cleaner turned black from the residual gas shalac. We added some fresh gas, changed the plugs, rotor, cap and fuel filter and reinstalled the carb. After having the outdrive serviced, we dropped it in the water and engine fired right up and purred like a kitten. Total parts was about 100 bucks.

If you try to use the gas without taking the necessary steps to clean out the fuel system you run a high risk of engine damage (head gasket, bent valves, etc). I think the little time and effort, and the 100 bucks was well spent.

+1

Verify that it hasn't separated and use it up in the cars.

Thanks too everyone for the tips and suggestions, i think to be on the very safe side i'm just gonna pump out the old gas and put in new that way there are no worries at all! Plus if i do that i can use it in mowers and save some for that bonfire that was suggested!..lol. Just for giggles i will put some in a glass and see if it seperated or not, but really don't want to chance it.

Thanks too all again it is appreciated!

Re: 2 yr old gas

Ok so i have found out that the boat has about a quarter of a tank of gas in it.

Do you think if i put in some gas treatment and fill it with fresh gas i will be ok?
I found out that the gas tank is under the floor and i'm really not sure how i'm gonna get the old gas out of there for sure! Only thing i can think of is trying to find a long enough hose and to sifen out the old gas butnot looking forward to getting a mouth full of fuel:( What do you all think??

Thanks
Jeff

Re: 2 yr old gas

Jeff,

If it was me, I would remove the gas line someplace after the gas pump and remove the coil wire from the coil and use the gas pump on the engine to get rid of the rest of the gas in the tank. (You'll need a good battery to do this one however... ) then replace any water separator filters and gas filters.

It might take a while, but, the old gas really messes things up when you try to use it.

If you don't want to do that, then I would put some fresh premium in the tank, (roughly a 1/4 or 1/2 of what you have in there now, add a can of octane boost and run it out on muffs (so if you do have problems, you're not stuck on the lake) then replace any gas filters/water separator filters.

Re: 2 yr old gas

just top off the tank and use it. I have a couple of muscle cars that sometimes do not get used for a year or two and i always leave them full and have stabil in them. I have never had a problem, just got the vette out saturday and it had gas that was at least two years old and it fired right up. to much misinformation out there about old gas. If you are concerned put a can of seafoam in it and let er rip.

I have 4 year old gas in my boat. It's been treated by Stabil and the like products.

Still have a little under half a tank left and runs perfect.

What kind of dishwater are they selling you guys for gas? I have never used stabilzer in anything. The lawnmower gets shut off in the fall with whatever is in it, same with the snow blower in the spring. they have been starting for the last 10 years. Just fired up my old huskavarna 2100 it had 3 year old fuel in it, and last but not least my boat sat for the 2009 season with 20 gallons of fuel in it, put my new motor in this spring and fired it up no problem, topped up the tank and went cruising. I think this old gas thing is totaly overblown.Just my 2 bits worth.:)

Ditto.

Also, gas does not "go bad" in 35 days. Most things I've seen and experienced show that gas tends to "go bad" in 4-6 months if not treated, and longer if treated with something like stabil.

Thought that would be the best bet. Ok now where can i dispose of the old fuel? maybe try to use it in old lawn mower!

I put old gas in a new lawnmower and it gummed it up. The shop denied warranty repairs because the (Toro) warranty requires gas less than 30 days old. I had to pay for the repair. I decided i wasn't buying any more Toro equipment, but that's off topic.

Your county or city may have a place where you can dispose of old gasoline.

My buddy winterized and stabiled his boat 2 years ago. Gas tank half full. Tarped the boat and left it in the backyard. Last summer when he realized he wasn't going to use it he stabiled it again. This year he filled the gas tank and it started right up. Been using it all summer. Of course, he does no maintanance and always gets away with it....LOL.

Re: 2 yr old gas

It is just flat out amazing to me that these threads go on so long......

Chances are fairly good that it would be ok BUT if it isn't the cost can be VERY high....

If you like gambling at high risk for low rewards with decent odds then go for it

If you want to be safe then change it out....

a couple things to consider:
5 gallons of bad gas + 40 gallons of fresh gas = 45 gallons of bad gas
If it isn't good enough to run in your boat then it isn't good enough for your car, truck, weedeater, lawnmower, etc

Any engine that you run it in should be expendable.

It's a gamble and it's your own personal choice.... keep in mind that the fellow that you decide to listen too on the net might just be a 12 yr old kid locked up in a nuthouse..... You REALLY want an answer, call your local boat dealer and ask them if old gas would void their warranty.

BTW I have used old gas several times in the past.. Had good luck all but the last time.. That one cost me an engine.... I had run that engine for several years and I got a bigger boat that I swapped it into. The boat had 1/4 tank of fuel (25 gal) that was supposed to be 1 year old..... I added 25 gallons of fresh and went out on the water. I burned about half of that gas and the boat was barely running and was ticking when I got it back on the trailer. Fouled plugs sticking valves and one that hit the piston. I swapped on another set of heads and swapped the fuel for all fresh. Went out again and it was ok again but wasn't the same.... It idled rough, had blowby, and was less powwerfull.... got home and did a compression check. It was low and uneven... I guess the damage included rings/cylinders too.... To this day that engine is sitting in the corner of the shop to be rebuilt one day.... It will likely be there for a LONG time lol...

good luck with your new boat
