I just finished my winter project my plans where to fish the local electric only lakes, but since the boat turned out so good I would like to fish some bigger lakes. My problem is this is my first boat and Im notto sure what sizeoutboard HP would work best for the boat hauling 2 guys and fishing gear no livewell.
I do know I want tiller steer something I can lift off and set on a stand when not in use and keep my fuel tank size to less than 5 gallons. the boat measures 14'6" and is 50" wide at the wides point and is fiberglass.

Re: Outboard size recommendations

Normally I'd recommend a Johnnyrude 25hp for a rig like that...but since you mention you'd like to remove it to keep on a stand every trip out...I'd stick to a 7.5-18hp.

Just depends on how fast you want to go. To fully plane out a 25 or 35 would be best. A 15 might plane it out with a light load and save you on fuel economy due to less friction, while a 7.5 would simply plow around but great for trolling.

I have a 5.5 Johnson and couldn't burn 6 gallons on one trip if I tried.

Nice rig, looks like you've done a great job with her:)

9.8 HP would be perfect, it's light weight and will give you enough power to use in rivers/lakes. I'd check the coast guard label on the boat just to make sure you're not going to exceed the recommended HP. From the looks of the boat, I'd guess it would take up to at least a 25hp. However, the 9.8 would be easier for to mount and remove as needed.

I'm with the above posters. First, find the maximum HP rating for your boat, which is usually a function of length/beam width. I would go with the maximum allowable, but for a boat that small/light I think 25HP would be the maximum you would want to go. Maybe a nice 15-20HP would be good and slightly easier on fuel if you're only going to carry 5gal. of fuel on board.

From the USCG formula, your boat should be able to handle a 25HP engine, but it may be a bit too big to be removing all of the time.

(LxWx2)-90=max HP

So (14.5ft x 4.15 x 2) - 90 = 30.35 HP.

15 hp will weigh the same as a 9.9.

15 hp minimum, 25 - 35 hp preferred.

I used to have a mid eighties e-rude 35... was no problem for me to put on and off but then I'm 6'4" 235... could be tough for a smaller or older person

The above answers should get where you want to be... but you will need to decide what you want.... under 10 mph or 20 plus....

One thought, a 9.9 would still give you access to the next step up on lakes under 10 HP.

But a nice Yammie 25 would rock.

9.9's usually weigh the same as 15's. So I'd opt for a 15 if I could find one. But a 9.9 will still work nicely.
