hello all, we purchased an american 16 with this engine. Redid most of the interior the racoons ate and now its time to start engine. On muffs it started after only primer bulb and cranking and idled nice. Applied pwr and runs rough, surges, pulled pwr back to a smooth idle. Read articles and forums, so i R&Red the following: cracked coils, rebuilt carbs(parallel float with gasket surface only adj i made, otherwise very clean), spark plugs, fuel pump, oh ya ign switch, bought it with no key, and water pump repair kit. Cleaned thermostat assy and reinstalled with new gaskets. Oh ya, service manual shows pressure valve under therm housing cover but it was retained by the thermo housing plate when it came apart. Thats the way it went together, is that ok? Anyway boat fired right up but still runs rough at pwr. Plus water is coming out of every hole in the gearcase as soon as water is turned on on muffs. Is this normal. Pump seems to be working(hot water out of exhaust outlet and hot water outlet aft end of gearcase). Thank you for any sugestions.

water preasure while on the muff's will cause water to come out of places that you wouldn't think water should come out that's normal, i would go ahead and and do a compretion check and if that's good drop the lower unit and change the water pump and go from there

thanks for the info, that is something i havent done is a compression test.the previous owner said he only ran about 10 to 15 tanks of fuel thru the boat, so it doesnt have alot of hours on the engine. but ill try that , thanks
