I just bought a used boat "1987 Grumman Challenger". The boat has a Mariner outboard on it, I have a few question regarding the motor. Can someone help me decode this motor as far as year and any relavant information, the previous owner thought it was 1989 but was not sure, the numbers on the motor are as follows:
Model: 40ELO
code: 6E9 L
serial number : 431894

The thing I'm most confused about is the previous owner says he mixes gas & oil in the tank 50:1 but the motor cover is labled Mainer oil injected?
I have no boat motor experience but I do know cars very well and I see no holding tank for oil if it is indeed oil injected.
If I'm supposed to mix gas and oil in the tank, could someone tell me the proper ratio and what oil you prefer.
Thanks in advance,
Ray

The engine was originally supplied with an oil injection system called 'Auto-Blend', which is responsible for the deaths of almost as many engines as the OMC VRO system. Someone has done you a favour by removing it...

The correct petrol/oil mixture is 50:1. Use an oil with a TC-W3 rating (I prefer the Quicksilver brand).
