I have a 1984 Renkin 21' walkaround Cuddy. It is powered by a 3.7L mercruiser 170hp. I am having some problems with the motor but I am working thoes out. I have been thinking about doing a motor swap and adding some power. Is there any advise as to what would be a good motor for this and what other things would I have to concider ie.. stern drive compatability etc......

Thank you.

It's a Mercruiser IO Dan, not an outboard. Moving to IO forum.

Re: 3.7L mercruiser repower?

There is nothing that is going to be an easy swap for more power.
Any V6 engine (approx same HP) will need a Y pipe for the transom shield and some stringer mounts not used on the 3.7.
Going to a V8 will require the same thing, plus a gear ratio change in the outdrive.
There is also nothing on a 3.7 you could use on a V engine. Lots of money and work is all it will take for a different engine.

Hi Dan,

Your best bet might be to just get those problems you mentioned "worked out" and sell the boat. Then you can find something that has the power and engine you want.

If you really like the boat and and cannot part with it, you could remove the 3.7L engine and drive and sell that stuff. There's still people out there that will buy it.

Then, find yourself a damaged boat with the engine and drive inside that you can remove and put in your current boat.

The option above is expensive unless you find a boat with an engine/drive that you can basically "steal"!

If you have to pay someone else to do it......it won't be worth it!

Cheers,

Rick
