Hello

My father recently purchased a 5 HP 2 cycle outboard and where having a hard time figuring out what it is.

I can tell you all that after doing some research I think its an Eska outboard because there is a Tecumseh marking on the flywheel. So after a complete tear down of the engine and looking at all the parts I can find no trace of a make or model number anywhere. I don't know if someone repainted over it or took the plate off. I can say that the cowl is white and the lower unit is a blue color. The face plate says 5 HP and there are two knobs for choke and fuel mixture. There is an extra nipple for separate gas tank.

Im looking for any places to find the missing numbers. I need them for gaskets and other parts for a rebuild.

I don't know if this helps but the Magneto says EZ start Tecumseh # 30550 and the breaker cam is # 30552. I have also found some other number's stamped into different parts but searching on the internet has gone nowhere.

Any help would be great, thanks for looking

Yes most likely an Eska using a Tecumseh powerhead. It has a water cooled exhaust leg.Models after 67 have an impeller usually worn out.
There are 2 basic blocks a split case V51,V58,V61,V81.
Unit block AV520 with 638 prefix,AV520,AV600,AV750,AV817.
5hp with a V51 were 64,
1965,67,newer 5hp were AV520 or AV600.
While some folks have had good luck with these motors.
they do have a poor reputation and at their best they are noisy, vibrate a lot
and can be said to not run the same 2 times in a row.Parts can be difficult to find and expensive.I would part it out or try to get it to run with the least investment
sell it and put the money toward a Evinrude or Johnson 3,4,5,5.5 or 6 hp from 52-67
many routine parts right here at iboats or NAPA,or lots of vendors on ebay and many BRP dealers.More difficult parts are available new and used from some of the same venders. These are smooth, reasonably quiet, and reliable with a wonderful
reputation.I had a close cousin Clinton outboard paid $6 serviced it and cleaned,
repaired recoil, new Clinton remote tank spent many hours and it was kind of fun.
When all was said and done this very attractive motor sold for $105.A nice profit if you throw out the time. An Evinrude/Johnson as listed well tuned but nasty looking would be about $200 in this area maybe as much as $300 to $400 well refurbished.
looking close to new.

I love a tecumseh and my little eska takes offence at this statement, except the part about being noisy and vibrating alot, she admits to that...the rest is pure prejudice

Re: Looking for Some help Eska outboard?

I have to admit I go by what I read here. It all ways seems the the impeller is trashed.I don't mean "should be replaced" but trashed. It seems a really high percentage try and try with no good results. They usually run but sometimes get to the fishing hole and won't restart,Work great on Monday but won't start on Tuesday.
Then there is the cost and availability of parts.I think the impeller is around $40 with shipping.Solidstate ignition failure seems common as well.
Somebody here had something like 5 Eskas and was ready to give them away
from frustration.Glad your is serving you well.

Re: Looking for Some help Eska outboard?

the small eska impellers are 9.8 7/16 ID mercs, should cost about 11-12$ here at iboats but the tall ones I don't know, carb kits can be found cheap but those ebay bandits will stick it to you. The fuel pump and flaper valve are the only parts I can't source cheaply but there are some work arounds, the solid state ignition is repairable but $$$ or it can be a DIY if one is handy with a soldering gun

My noisy, rattle-bug Eska is the most reliable motor I have. I haven't put a dime into it, it ran when I found it. I keep telling myself to sell it and put the money toward one of the Johnny-Rude parts motors I keep wanting to put in the water, but at the end of the day, it is my Eska that brings me home. It is cheap, light and reliable. Not so strong, but keeps on running. It also has no transmission. I hate not having neutral or reverse, but I am getting used to it.
