not peeing from telltale

Ive just bought an old glasspar avalon with a 1968 65 merc that the owner said runs great just needs a new impeller. I changed it out and still no pee! Shot compressed air into the hole, still nothing! Ran a single piece of jacketed trailer wire up it about 12 to 16 inches and couldnt get any further. looks like its hitting where it goes into the motor. Im not sure where to go from here? I would like to do it myself if at all possible. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

If you pull the tell tale hose off at the engine, does it work?

Do you mean removing it from where it comes out of the motor? Or where it comes out and discharges into the water? I have not tried either, but running something through that hose should mean its clear, right?
