My first post Repairing water pump on 69 9.5 hp
Following shop manual for 9r69s, but when four bolts removed, lower unit drops only about 1/4 inch. Not enough to get a screw driver in to disconnect shift connecter. How do i get it to drop further? Also the manual says to put motor in foward gear. In forward lower unit does not drop at all. The manual says nothing about disconnecting anything at the top of the shift rod and I see nothing that could be adjusted to lower the bottom unit.

I Think you may have to sahift the motor to reverse to access the connector.

when in reverse the connector on the shift rod should be visible.

In reverse it does drop less than 1/4 in, but not enough to get a screwdriver in and line it up enough with the bolt. The bolt is very tight and will need a large screwdriver to break it loose.

I don't know the bolt size for the 9.5, but it probably requires a 5/16" or 3/8" socket. Try a 1/4" drive set with one of these sockets - you may be able to get it into the gap.

While people tend to use a screwdriver, because the bolt heads have a slot in them, there is no reason why you have to do so.
