My son and I just bought a boat and found the Johnson 140 had a ring come apart. Compression was 110/0/90/90. Last night we took the powerhead off and found a tiny nick in #3 cylinder along with one on the edge of the head, also welds on the piston top.
Tonight we complete the disassembly.

I have a strong Evinrude 115hp off my last boat, 73 Ranger. What is involved in setting up the 73 E115 on my new Procraft. Steering Arm Assembly, Cables etc. The parts catalogs show different numbers but similar sizes to these parts.

It would be nice to use the boat while we rebuild/trick out the 140

84 Johnson 140hp ? model: J140TLCRD
73 Evinrude 115hp ? model: 115393M

Drawing on memory here......

Both engine incorporate the large RED electrical plug at the engine (A match).
Throttle and shift cables connect in the identical fashion. (A match)
Steering arm of both engine are the same length etc. (A match)

Should simply be a matter of switching engines with nothing other than adjusting the shift and throttle cables as needed. If I'm in error, I'm sure someone will be along with the proper information shortly.

Oh, The 1984 model normally incorporates a VRO fuel/oil pump and if so, and if it has not been modified back to a premix condition..... then the gasoline in that fuel tank would be STRAIGHT GASOLINE. Keep in mind that your 1973 model requires a 50/1 fuel/oil mixture.

I beleive that you may have to reuse the retaining clip from the 73 cables(motor end), but that everything else will be a direct swap. It should be pretty straight forward.

Thanks Joe and CRB, I will check those three items after work today.
My J140 block is definitely shot along with the matching head plate. Looks like I will have to swap motors until I can find a rebuildable powerhead cheap.

The E115 has been setting up for over a year and from what I have read on this forum I will need to replace the impeller.
Thanks for the info, I will post the outcome.
