Hi All, I am new here and want some quick advise... I have a 1988 21ft Daytona 350 Mag Mercruiser Alpha with what I'm pretty sure is a Quicksilver 3000 control. The control works but is sloppy and annoying.

My question is whether it is worth the time to take it out and try to adjust/fix the sloppiness, adjust the cables, etc. Or, should I just spring for a new control and do it right?

Any experience with this? New controls are about $250 and I don't want to tear it apart only to then decide I should just get a new control. Thanks for the help!

Download the SERVICE MANUAL and have a look at what's involved... Even if you do decide to fit new controls (and it may not be the controls that are sloppy, it could be the adjustment of the cables) the exercise of pulling them apart could be a benefit in the long run (experience in how Merc put things together)...

And if it is the control, you can get new bushing for them.

Had boat everyone thought the drive or short shift cable was bad, then I pulled the control box and greased her up and all is well.

Everything works together and when someone isn't playing well nothing works well.

Thanks CR2K! I think it is just the bushing that the handle sits on cuz that's where it is sloppy.

If it is a 3000 series control, there's a nut inside the base of the handle that holds it (the handle) on the actual splined shaft inside the control unit. It may be loose. Put it in forward and pry out the neutral button with two small screwdrivers to expose the nut. Also get the manual.
