Hi all,

I just bought a batliner and it has a 85 force motor.
Just got it out and I can't seem to get it running right.

Starts great.Idles perrrfect.
And I can push the throttle part way,and seems to run ok.But I can't get much speed out of it.
When I kick it down,it takes off with alot of power, but slowly starts to bogg down,so I can never reach top speed.

I cleaned the plugs, and that didn't help.Plugs were a little dirty on 2,but the 3rd was clean as a whistle.
Smokes like its flooded, but I know they all smoke.

I do a 50:1 ratio.
Mabe get some more gas and thin it out a tad might help?
Just seems like it boggs down when i give it some throttle.

Reverse seems to not have any hesitation.

Any advise what to do on this?
Thanks,
Scotty

check to see if you got spark on that plug thats clean, if you got spark, you may possibly have a bad head gasket allowing water in that cylinder,, steam cleaning that plug, and also do a compression test good luck don

I took the plug out after i ran it again, and that plug was a little dirty,so it must be working.
I also noticed it was a little damp with gas.So possibly when i reved it up,it flooded out.
Can't get plugs till monday as i had to order them.

I might get 3-4 gallons of gas today, and possibly add mabe an ounce less of iol to see if it still fouls the plug.

Pull the fuel pump off and make sure the diaphram does not have a tear in it.
Also make sure your vent is clear and that your fuel recovery line under the lower carb is clear.

Thought Id seen one here some place, but can't seem to find it again.

Checking it is easy...if its deformed, replace. If it lays flat on a table then your ok...they are made to be flat and over time they will deform or tear, Either problem requires replacement. If it lays flat with no rise on it at all, then you are good to go. odd's are it wont though. Good thing is its maybe a $30 part. Oh yeah...do not attempt to cut ure own like some guys. I have seen kits out there for harder to find pumps....and I can promise you it will work, but man ole man will it be such a pain to get it just right!

Oh yeah, and in case you were unsure...its located right behind where you install the fuel line. Easy as cake to get to. Just remove the bolts n go!

Just for ease...heres pics of your exact motor and what this guy had done.

Back firing through the intake can tear the thin rubber diaphram. Believe it or not, the engine will still run but poorly. You may have to remove the coil bracket to make room to get to one of the fuel pump screws.

I hear ya on that one.lol

Well,no tear in the diaphram that I can see.Im beginning to wonder if the prop has something to do with it!
The guy I bought it from hit a rock on his last time out,and its a little bent.
All 3 fins.
The motor shakes a little so Im guessing it's the prop as it's unbalanced.
Im wondering if that could be holding it up a little when going up the throttle.

Still trying to find someone with a timming light so I can check spark.I might have to go buy one.

Do you know where I can get a prop for the force 85?
Gonna need one anyways,so might as well get that figured out. :)

You dont need a timing light to check spark. You can get a cheap spark tester at your local autoparts store and test with that. I Had a similar problem on my 1990 50hp and it turned out to be no spark in 1 cyl. If one plug is clean and a bit wet with gas its most likely not firing.

Look for props on ebay. use chrysler force prop for a search term. Your optimum all around prop is 13x19. If you ski or body board then look for a 13 x 17 for a better hole shot.

With a bent up prop, it will be hard to check the performance of the engine. I would stay away from WOT as the vibration can damage the engine.
