I have new plugs, rebuilt carb, all hoses OK in motor, new supply hose, tank OK. Motor runs on bottom cylindar only. Compression reads the same in both cylindars (65 psi). Upper cylindar has spark. Can timing cause this? Sometimes both cylindars work and engine runs smooth. Can I still have bad coil despite spark being present?

Other than breaker points gap being grossly out of adjustment, there is nothing to possibly affect timing. "Has spark" is The Great Deceiver. Yes, you can have a bad coil. You can also have a bad spark plug wire. Or dirty/mis-adjusted breaker points. Or a blown head gasket. Or water getting into that upper cylinder. Since it cuts in and out, you can eliminate the reeds as the suspect. All we can do is guess. You need to look into it a bit deeper and locate the real problem.

I would bet on a bad coil,BUT,you should put new points and condenser in as these parts are a general maint.on those engines. If you then get your spark ,you fixed it,but, while the flywheel is removed, visually look at your coils, they did eventually crack and leak, new parts are avail.on the IBOATS website. You will need to pull the flywheel with a harmonic balancer type puller.Dont use a jaw type, you will bend or break the flywheel
