i just got a 66 chris craft with and 82 chrysler 75hp. clean plugs, got new gas in it and it started right up and ran fine. started everytime after that. first problem i see is when i chock it gas pours out the front of the carbs. (why is this happening) while runing some gas comes out front of carbs but not as bad(why). anyway a week later i went to start the motor and it fired once then backfired and died not all it will do is crank and not fire at all. any ideas? i checked one wire and its got spark. where do i start. thanks guys

When you choke it it asks for more gas and some will come out the front of the carb. These motors will always have some gas comming from the carbs.
If you back fired you could have ruined your fuel pump. Or it could have jumped time or the flywheel key could have sheared.
Check the compression and spark on all cyl.
You probably will need to change some hoses due to the ethanol.
Just a few things to look at.Do these things and get back,J

hey sorry it took so long to get back. i checked compression and spark and there both good. now you said the fuel pump could be ruined. where is the fuel pump and how do i check it. i know this isnt the best idea but i tried starting it just for a second with starting fluid and it did fire. so i know the problem now is no fuel.....also i understand the carbs will leak some fuel out the front and i guess thats what the vacum hose at the bottom of the 3 carbs is for. but in my opinon i think there leaking to much fuel out the front. when i chock it it dumps fuel. thanks again need more ideas what to check

If fuel is pouring out of the carb, either your float level is too high or your recirculation system is clogged. The hose under the carbs is part of the recirculation system. The little fitting that it attaches to has a very fine orifice in it and it cloggs easily. Take it out and spray it with carb cleaner.

The fuel pump is on the right side of the engine below the coils. It is behind the fuel inlet filter and it held in with six screws. The fuel pump diaphram is a 1/16 inch piece of rubber that moves back and forth by action of the #2 and #3 pistons. When the engine backfires through the carbs because it is too lean, the pressure can damage the diaphram. They cost less than $10 to replace.

Buy a Clymer Force Outboard Shop Manual.

If you want to test fuel pump operation, take the bottom line off of the carbs. PULL YOUR KILL SWITCH so the engine doesn't start. Have someone hold a small jar under the hose while you crank the engine. This will show you that the fuel pump is pumping fuel.

Put rags under the carb before you pull the fuel line as fuel will come out.
