manually trim up a motor

I have a 1975 85Hp Mercury that I need to take into the shop for massive electrical problems. The power trim is not working at all, but I can't find the manual release valve to move the motor up manually. Right now it's down too far to put the toter on it to take it anywhere. I have one of the service manuals, but the valve isn't in the spot according to the print. Does anyone have an suggestions on how to get the motor up? Thanks.

Re: manually trim up a motor

get a 12v riding lawnmover, motorcycle, or snow mobile battery and run the trim motor directly from it.

If 2wire:
Then just connect and see what happens. If it goes down then flip wires.

If 3 wire motor:
Never, ever connect blue and green at same time. Black to ground. Blue is usually up and green is usually down. If you connect both at same time then you are telling motor to spin in both directions at once. If one is connected then other must be left free. DO NOT connect it to ground.

That motor should have an external PTT pump and resevoir in the boat. On the bottom of the PTT motor/resevoir there is a knurled knob. Turn it all the way CCW (or is it CW?) and the motor will be able to be tilted up. You will need to use both hands and your back to lift it, but it will move.

If that won't work, loosen the hydraulic hoses and then lift the motor. Oil will dribble out, but the motor will tilt.

Yes, find that knurled knob as Chris1956 said, and turn it all the way CW. This will release the hydraulic pressure to the "up" sequence, HOWEVER...it is still extremely difficult for one person to manually lift the motor, but if the release valve is working, it will relieve the pressure. Now as previously said, if you will hook 12v POSITIVE to the green wire going into the pump motor and connect a black NEGATIVE wire to the black wire going into the pump motor, and assuming the pump motor is good...it should raise the motor. Connect the neg wire first and then the posi wire...Caution here...wear a good pair of gloves when touching the posi wire to the green wire...12 volt DC can create a tremendous amount of heat at connection points and simply using your bare fingers is definitely not recommended!

The Blue wire controls the up direction on that motor. Green is for down. +12VDC Power on the blue wire and ground on the black wire at the PTT motor may cause it to operate in the up direction.
