Thanks to this forum I've got my (new to me) 1976 kicker running. Had to rebuild carb. and get new points, coils & Impeller. Only problem is it's really hard to start. It takes 30 or so pulls to get it started, once it's started it's ok.

Does anyone know the correct setting, gaps, for the for the points and plugs?

Thanks, Doug

That wonderful little outboard should never take more than 3 pulls to start.

Point gap is .020"
Plug gap is .030"

However, that may not be your problem. How about you tell us your exact method for starting the engine when it's cold? That may be the entire problem.

And, have you done a compression test?

Yes, compression on both cyclenders is pretty low. 55psi on first pull building to 85 to 90 after three pulls.

(If it stays this hard to start I'll try doing a ring job. I had a 4 horse Suzuki that only had 35 psi and had to do a ring job, it brought it up to 90 - 100psi, works great now.)

On cold starts, choke out and the throttle a half inch above where it says start on the cover.

PS. thanks for the correct gaps.

I believe if the choke lever is mounted upside down on those models, the choke valve will not close completely. Visually inspect choke to see if it's closing, if only 3/4's closed, it'll take many, many pulls!

Will inspect it, thanks. Doug

I've got the motor up at the lake and will not see it until this Friday.
Thanks for all the advise and info. Will re-set the gaps and check the choke.

Any other advise? All appreciated.
I will let everyone know how it works out.

Well, reset the points and gaps on the little motor. Checked the choke and it's closing all the way. Also put a new fuel connector on, the old one was leaking.

Now it takes about 8 or 10 pulls when it's cold but runs great when it gets warmed up.

Thank you guys for the help.
