try to start and acts like batttery nearly dead. will hardly turn over, wha...wha...wha. won't turn engine over fast enough to start. sounds just like your car does when the batt is about gone. got a new battery and still does same. thought maybe starter going out, bought a new starter and installed, that made no diff. checked all batt./starter cables and connections, look OK. can't figure out why it wont turn over or spin rapidly like it should so it can fire off?

Sounds like a bad battery cable or bad connection. Don't just do a visual check. Disconnect both the positive cables from the starter solenoid and clean them. Do the same to the negative cables, especially the one attached to the engine block.

If it still does it after checking all cables and connections, remove starter, disassemble and lube the shaft bushings, front and rear, w/ good chassis grease.
That's what my 90 HP did and it cured it.

i have checked and double checked all batt/starter/solenoid cables and contacts. satisfied they are good. if you pull out all the plugs, she spins freely and starter etc. seem to work fine. soon as you put plugs back in she won't hardly turn over. if can try a comporession test but I don't have a testor. I guess if i have to purchase all that, may as well take it to shop. already invested $225 in starter so I don't want to trial and error too much. something perhaps in head. cannot figure this one out. she just won't turn over.

Pull your fuel pump and check to see that the diaphram is not damaged. If you get a tear in the fuel pump diaphram, it will load up the lower cylinders causing the engine to act sluggish and the starter Bendix to jump out.

Also, you say the engine drags but have not mentioned if you are getting any firing at all? Is it trying to start and backfiring? If it is, then there is a good chance it is your fuel pump diaphram.

Sorry, I didn't notice the part about replacing the starter. That should have cured the problem if it was the same as I had w/ mine. I'll assume you've checked all batt cables to be sure they haven't corroded inside the insulation.
