What keeps the crank and bearings lubricated in an outboard?

What keeps the crank and main bearings lubricated and keeps them from gaulding up from heat, Does the water keep it cool enough that it does not need lubrication or is their a little person inside them squirting oil on them.:D I would think no lubrication on bearings would make them seize. An explanation of this would put my mind at ease. Thanks

Oil is mixed with the gas as a pre-mix, or added to the gas from a seperate pump on the engine. In the case of premix, or anytime oil is added directly to the gas, it enter,s the engine as a oil-gas mist. Once in the crankcase, the bulk of the oil will come out of suspension for lubrication of the moving part's. You will see this if you were to have an engine with a leaking crankshaft seal. You can watch it being ejected almost as a pure oil. It would probably take a chemist, or physicist to tell what really goes on hear. Also a ball, or roller bearing need's little or no oil pressure for lubrication. An outboard is not like a auto engine with it's oil bath, and force feed to sleeve type bearings.

The oil that you put in the gas is what lubricates them. All of that fuel passes through the crankcase on its way to the cylinders. You might find it interesting to do a little reading up on how a two stroke works. There are tons of it in print.

This is courtesy of another iboats member but it explains your question well.
Hope it helps.

Thank you guys so much! I will check out the literature on how 2 strokes work. This forum is like the forum I get on for bamboo fly rods. Everyone is so helpful and does not treat anyone like an idiot. I really appreciate your comments and answers and hopefully wil be able to help answer questions in the future. Thank you!!!

Keep in mind that there four-stroke outboards as well. Those engines are very much like the engine in your car so they have an oil sump, oil pump, and that oil is circulated through the engine including the rod, main, and camshaft bearings. Mixing oil with the fuel is not necessary in those engines.

Isnt the fact that the oil is used to lubricate the moving parts inside the engine why we shud NEVER use starting fluid, but rather premix in a spray bottle to get a hard starting ob goin?
