I've been looking to pick up a new cowling for my xr4 since mine is pretty beat. If it just had scratches or whatever then I'd paint it, but it's cracked and chunks are missing. Looks like a beaver ate it! Anyway, I've found a couple cowlings. Cheapest is an xr2 cowling but there is also a blue band 200 blackmax cowling too. Would either of them fit? They LOOK like the same style, but I figured there might be some differences. I know the xr2 is a totally different motor than the xr4 too. Thanks folks!

Early XR4's had a 16 amp electrical system and a clamshell cowling. Later they went to the wet 40 and a bucket. The clamshell won't fit over the 40 amp flywheel cover.

If yer 16 amp, I don't see why it wouldn't fit.

What is it with XR4 cowlings. Mine's pretty ratty, also.

mine is a clamshell style. Its an 89. So does that mean that an xr2 clamshell would fit on there? I'd re do the decals but will it fit? The xr2 cowling I'm seeing looks pretty nice actually so I hope it will fit.

Re: xr2 cowling on my xr4?

Any XR2/XR4 clam shell should interchange so it should work just fine...

All clam shells are tha same as far as size. Tha only difference will be in tha front of tha cowls and how they latch. Vertical reed motors have tha metal "spring" type latches. Horizontal reed motors like tha 200 are cut a little different in tha front and use a single "wide" plastic latch. Tha XR2/XR4 can be modified to fit any 2.0/2.4 horizontal reed motor as is mine.....

Even got a friend thats fabing up some brackets so I can put tha XR4 clam shell cowls on one of my 2.5 motors............

You can run any bucket style upper and lower cowling set up to 1999 but not the DFI versions. They sit further back and will cause a problem at the carbs.

You need to have the correct mounting brackets on your mid. If you have a clamshell style vs. the bucket style as in the pictures i've posted you will need to change the mounting brackets. I'm going from memory but I don't think you need to pull the powerhead to change them but I could be wrong. I'll look later today, I have a mid sitting in the shop.

These are 96 EFI's on a 89-90 135.

That looks really nice! I will definetly go that route once I do 10 million other things on this boat first! For now I think I'll just stick with the clam shell style. Today is my lucky day too I guess. I found a 200 clamshell for 80 bucks about an hour from me. To boot, he is drivng right by me tonight at 7 and I'm meeting him 5 minutes from my house. Doesn't get any more convienient than that. Thanks for all the info. I will definetly do the bucket conversion at some point, but for now I just need something better than the cracked up POS that I have.
