Thanks Isaacm1986. Its always nice to get a second opinion. Plus its easier to really see whats going on with the boat.

Let me know the next time your heading to Everett. Maybe you can stop by and have a beer and check out the Olympian.

I just have to say this....... do not cut the outer skin of the boat....... do all your work from the inside and just go slowly.

Well i cut out the the transom as you can see. The wood was completely soaked/rotted. Found out the transom wood went down a lil farther than i expected. I might have to take out the seat boxes. I thought the seat boxes were filled with foam but there not. I might replace the seat boxes with a BW style bench seat.

What would be the best and lightest plywood for replacing my transom?
Do i really need marine grade plywood?

No exterior grade plywood is just fine. Just make sure to glass it good and it will last for years to come.

You could you treated plywood also, and that would be just fine.

Yeah that what i was thinking. Especially since it will be sandwiched in between fiberglass.

Thanks

What types of fiberglass should i use for rebuilding the inner transom fiberglass skin? I know there are few different weaves and weights.

What would you use if this was your project.

Re: Olympian 12ft restoration(need help)

I found a newer version of my boat and i like the way the rear seat is built. I'm considering building mine in the same way. If it is not to difficult to do.

What do you guys think? Is this a waste of time and $.

If you feel savvy enough to build that rear seating area go for it!
I definitely think it would be cool.
But my suggestion is you first get all the rot out, then rebuild everything, THEN plan the layout and cosmetic appearence of your boat. It is definitely nice to think and dream of what it will look like, but be sure you can get all the necessities done before you get too set on something. (Trust me-I went, and still am going through this).
Good luck!

Stick with exterior grade plywood. Treated wood is usually lower grade with more gaps and will actually rot faster. Also, you may have an adhesion issue with the fiberglass. Epoxy will be stronger, but poly will be cheaper. Both will seal effectively. Decking should be at least 5/8".

I used a combo of 1.5 OZ CSM and 18 OZ roving on my rebuild but my boat is a bit diff style than what you have.
Im sure somebody with a boat similar to yours will chime in.

Cool thanks. I was wondering how thick the wood needed to be.

What a bout the foam core in the floor. Should i drill a few test holes to see if the core is still solid?

Not sure about your particular application but in runabout types 1 1/4 inches is generally the generic size. You can get this size by simply bonding two sizes of Plywood together. Dont spend the money on Marine grade- Top grade exterior is just as good, just be sure to coat all faces of the wood with thinned resin so when you begin applying the cloth and resin, the wood doesn't soak too much up and cause dry spots.

AS for the test holes-this is the best thing you can do. If you find water-logged foam its time to rip the floor out, but if not be sure to seal the holes up with a good quality sealer like 3M 5200.
