I just purchased my first boat which needs a little work, it is an I.M.P 20' cuddy with a 188hp mercruiser. I do not know the name or year have searched the net with the serial# but no luck. To make matters worse guy I purchased from said have to apply for a lost title, he was unable to find it at the time of the sale and has recently past away. I think I can resolve the title issues with DNR and the state. I would just like to know more about the boat if anyone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it,Thanks.

Re: I.D. Problems

What you need to do is break down the HID (hull ID number) it is embossed on the stern. all boats manufactoried after November 1977 are required to have one. this will tell you who made the boat, the hull number, and month and year it was made.
without this number you will not be able to register the boat. Also, check the last state issued tag/sticker and get the number off of it, contact the the state and they can tell you everything you need to register the boat.

Re: I.D. Problems

I searched the boat lastnight and this evening, the only numbers I have found is a serial number along with capacities stamped on a red plate. I cannot trace the serial number on the net. Stickers were removed by owner. Thanks for the help, I have a start for now just have a project of tracking info. now it looks like.

The link below is to the USCG-maintained Manufacturers Identification Code (MIC) database for "IMP". If you read the comments, IMP has been assigned to several manufacturers over the years. The model Mercruiser in the boat leads me to think it was manufacturered by Island Moulded Products. You might be able to determine a range of years when the 188 type was used by posting in the I/O Forum or by searching the Mercury Service Manuals posted in that forum at the top under "Adults Only". The experts over there should be able to narrow it down for you. Try posting pictures of the boat in this thread and maybe someone can help.

FYI, I acquired my current boat more than ten years after the manufacturer went out of business but was able to contact both the owner and sales manager of the former company by the telephone numbers and addresses listed in the MIC file. You might be as lucky as me!
