Very little water comin' out from pee hole

Today, I've fired up my 1966 Lark VIII to see if everything was ok with the recently water pump impeller replacement. I had to turn off very fast my engine, it was hot at the head right beside the spark plugs. Not long after I shut the engine off, but return the key in ON position, I found out that the red light engine HOT turned on. I just hope I did'nt do any damage. While running the engine, I kept it in neutral position. I had a little water comin' out with exhaust at the pee hole.

SO did I do something wrong while changing the impeller or there is just not enough water in a big barrel to run it? It had water over 2-3'' over the big plate. I will get it on the lake this weekend and I just hope it pumps more water out.

just a suggestion since it is spring. check the hole for blockage. my dads boat every year the spiders climb into the pee hole and clog it up, always have something to push through it the first time I take it out

you may have installed the impeller backwards.

I don't think it is possible to install it backward, as being flexable rubber it should flip itself around the right way once it starts spinning.

Pull the thermostat out and test it, three bolt plate top back of the motor (at least it should be). Drop it in a boiling pot of water in a strainer and see if it opens at 140F or so. Could be stuck, could also be a blockage. You can't put an impeller in backward, it will flip into proper direction once started. The only thing you can do it forget to put the little key where the impeller is notched for the spot against the driveshaft.

Yes the impeller key is on the driveshaft properly. I didn't have any problems with the thermostat last fall. But I can also check it if it's simple to do.

I had a old johnson 20hp where I changed everything including head gasket.

Till I noticed on bottom of head there was a round aluminum washer that was rusted threw.

It looks like those push washers you find in carburetors where you have to punch them flat.

Just a thought, not sure if your model has it.

It's got to be high, not a 1/4 or a 1/3, we run the 64 3/4 full of water in a barrel.

Had water 2'' over the cavitation plate but the motor was slightly tilted up, if this can be the problem, I'll be very happy!:)

Put more water in the barrel and retry, keep the motor level.

Could it be the big O-ring on the top of the housing? It was in very good condition.

While changing th impeller, I've had to remove only 2 o-rings, the one at the top of the drive shaft, near the splines, and the other one is that big o-ring on the top of housing.

Are you sure the water tube made it in the pump outlet AND the grommet didn't get folded over if it did?

Re: Very little water comin' out from pee hole

With my '66 Lark VIII, i dont get much more than a gurgle out of the tell-tale (no **** stream), and more of a spurt as the thermostat opened up. I was told that it was nomal. Were you getting any water out of the tell-tale ? Have you resolved the issue ? Does anyone else have the same issue ?
