Need Wiring Help? Boat starts in forward or reverse and it isn't safe!

I have a Evinrude 50 HP 1975 model and twin shift/throttle control. My problem is I can't figure out how to set up the wiring for the start in Neutral ONLY. The boat will start in Reverse, forward or neutral and I am very concerned about this for safety with the kids. Can someone please help me resolve this? I need to make sure the boat only starts in neutral. Please help.
Thanks, David

Control box probably has (or should have!) some sort of neutral safety roller switch operated by a cam connected to the control arm. If the roller is broken, or the switch isn't screwed down, or the cam is missing or off-line, the switch won't do it's job and it will start in any gear.

The neutral start safety switch is located in the remote control. Bad news is it is listed as No Longer Available, so you will have to do some searching for one. Part number is 385659.

Oh. Sorry, I missed the word "twin". If that means two levers, shift and throttle, then disregard my reply which referred to the correct control for the motor. Just goes to show that just because it fits doesn't mean it will work as intended.

It would be easier and much less expensive to mount the neutral switch on the engine as shown in the 1973 cylinder and crankcase diagram (part #386056 from your dealer).

and make sure that you have the proper starter solenoid before wiring the neutral safety switch in. Using a automotive solenoid sometimes takes out the neutral switch, which may be the reason there is not one on your engine.

you can always run a couple splices from the kill switch wires and hide a toggle switch under the dash or something, if your only concern is to childproof it
