Ideas for fastening wires to transom

I have to replace this tube and 'pick up' (whatever its called) for the speedo.

Also, I'm installing a transducer on the other side of the outdrive.

Is there a better method to fasten the tube and wire to the transom than putting screws and tabs into my transom as you see here?

Thanks

How about a few spots of 5200 behind the tube to glue it to transom ??. :)

That's about the best...... be CERTAIN to fill those screw holes with epoxy to prevent infiltration of water.....

You could look into a shoot thru the hull transducer w/o outside holes and the pitoh/speedometer is really not accurate ...... get a high end fishfinder with full gps ;)

I hear you Bob, I have a gps, but its nice to have the speedo working. It would bother me to have a 'dead' dial on my dash.

I am going to ask about trading in my transom mount to a threw hull, but I ordered this online from US Cabela's, doubt I'll get customer service at a Canadian store.

I have some 5200 I was going to give each pre-drilled hole a shot before I put a screw in them.

I dunno, call me weird, I'm just not thrilled with putting holes in my boat. ;)

They (3M I think) make a small cable hold down that is adhesive on the back. Since it is 3M, I would assume that it would hold in water. Google it or check marine stores.

When I put the first hole in mine. I thought I was going to PASS-OUT. :D

If you like, you can glue a block of wood or a thick piece of plastic to the hull with 5200 and then screw into that.

Well, you could try self-adhesive cable clips. I've never used them on a boat, but the adhesive is pretty darned secure on other smooth surfaces.

You can find them in most hardware and electronics stores. It might be worth a try and, if it doesn't work, you can go to the screw type.

I have done this with a small piece of marine plywood. It worked very well as a transducer mount.

Re: Ideas for fastening wires to transom

In regards to the anticipated transom mount transducer:

Mounting on the port side of the outdrive or lower unit, is not recommended by nearly all manufacturers.
Right hand spinning props will toss "disturbed" water upward and may cause turbulence across the face of the transducer. Which in turn, yields poor depthfinder performance.

A "shoot" thru hull transducer has shortcomings to be sure. Namely, is the hull structure cored with foam or other material that is not solid glass. Not to mention the degradation of signal.

A "thru" hull is the best installation method to get top performance, but if your queezy about drilling a 1/16th screw hole in the transom.....your going to have mulitiple myocardial infarctions punching a one inch hole in the boat bottom for tranducer placement. Best to have paramedics standing by with a defibrilator.

Since you already have the holes.....just 5200 them well upon reinstallation. I had the same set up on my boat when I got it. Couldn't bring myself to reinstall it after my restoration. Out went the speedo :p

I didn't read that regarding installation either port or starboard. Thanks.

I'm installing one of these....

I'm just looking for a general depth not an 'image' of the bottom so I think I'll be ok with a port side transom mount for my purposes.

I bought some 5200 and am going to go that route.

As for the speedo, I have a Alpha I, Gen I so the outdrive option is a no go. I've read the comments on the accuracy of the pressure type speedo's but I'm ok with it. I have a gps if I need to know exactly.

When I posted I was thinking/hoping for a marine double sided tape. It's out there, but for light mounts, not underwater.

I'm agree with Bob on the shoot-thru hull ducer mounting. I had the ducer mounted on my old fiberglass boat like that and never had a problem with it, and I used the sonar for fishing. The toughest part is finding a good place to epoxy the ducer into the bilge, but that's easier than drilling/filling a bunch of holes for a transom mount.

.

Agreed.....some prop bubbles across the face of the tranducer may cause some intermittent loss of signal to your unit, however with that unit, no big deal for sure.
