Yelloish "milk" in LU?

Hello,

I took my 1976 25HP Johnson (25R76E) from winter storage, replaced oil in LU and ran it for 10 - 15 min in a tank.
Then I left it for 2 weeks and after that opened gear oil change screws to see if there is any water separated from oil is in there.

Instead, I had slightly yellow milky fluid\mix coming out. There was no separate oil or water. After 2 weeks, if I had a water got in, it should separate from oil.
Has anybody seen such thing?
This was first time I saw that.

Thanks.

Water in the gear oil will not separate that quickly. Your best bet is to drain it and pressure test the empty case to see where the leak is.

Did you replace the seals on the fill and vent plugs?

If you saw separation, you probably had a lot more water. Marine gear oil has emulsifiers which keep moderate amounts of water in suspension. I would try changing the oil with new drain/fill gaskets and check after a few hours running to see if there's evidence of water. If yes, pressure and vacuum test (after draining) and see what you find. A good LU will retain some pressure for 20 to 30 minutes. Don't not exceed 15 psig on the pressure.
