A few years ago I found A website that had a lot of info on the bail o-matic and also had an exploded view of the motor and I can't seem to find it anywhere.

I'm trying to hook up the water pump for a 1953 10 hp bail o-matic and it appears I may be missing a part. I'll post some pics if anybody thinks they can help me. Thanks

Re: Bail O-Matic

I know enough about them to know the 1953 was not a Bail-o-Matic. Got a model number? 1953 was 3835, 1954 was 3845. 1954 was the first year for the bailer.

Something doesn't compute here.

Re: Bail O-Matic

Could it be an assemblage of parts from several models?

I once built a Scott "33" from three different busted outboards.

The transom mounts are the same for a number of years and a number of HP's (and brands i.e. Firestone). I'm pretty sure that a lot of parts from any "Golden Pennant" 5,7.5,10 and 16 hp are interchangable (Gold top and green bottom). And the carry handles and tillers are known to break as they were a weak point on these motors (looks like pot metal). Any how many of these motors are Frankensteins as yours probably is. So it's hard to trust the ID on the transom. Neither of my motors have the correct transom on them.

Anyhow here is one link

Re: Bail O-Matic

I did find two numbers on the motor. One was 1953 and the other was 1954.

Can anybody explain to me how the water lines hook up to the impeller and motor? Right now there is one pipe that comes up from the bottom that doesn't even reach the impeller. Then there is a short pipe a couple inches long that goes right to the impeller from the motor. That leaves one opening coming from the motor but I don't know if this longer pipe is suppose to go there or not.

The 1954 Bail-O-Matic pump

Inlet water tube goes into bottom of 3845-5107 pump housing
3845-5305 water tube goes between outlet of 3845-5107 pump housing and powerhead.
3845-4336 grommets seal the tubes to the housing.

Re: Bail O-Matic

I'm gonna try from memory (If I can remember)

There should be one long tube which comes up from the lower unit and goes in the bottom of the impellar housing.

From the bottom portion of the impellar housing there should be a small tube that goes up to the power head.

From the upper part of the impellar housing the outer portion of the bailomatic should go into the lower unit and reach the housing (I don't think theres a seperate tube there but I may be wrong)

Would a dab of color help?

Re: Bail O-Matic

Curious about why you call it a Bail-O-Matic as though that was the brand name. Not all Scotts had the feature.

Seems sort of like calling certain OMC outboards VROs.

Re: Bail O-Matic

I called it a bail o-matic because that is what I have. I'm gonna guess that Scott-Atwater was the only brand that has this option or at least calls it a Bail o-matic. It appears to be pieced together like others have said but you couldn't tell by looking at it.

Everything is almost put together. Hopefully I can try her out before dark.

Well, I got everything put together and started her up and still no water coming out. The only thing that is coming out is air and exhaust. I'm not sure what to do next. The impellers looked fine.

Re: Bail O-Matic

How deep do you have it in the water? It has to be way deep. That is one reason they gave so many problems. It simply cannot lift water very far to establish a prime.

Also, everything has to be top notch perfect or it won't lift water.

Re: Bail O-Matic

Not only do they have to be deep, the pee-hole in the back is way small. You'll need to make sure that it is clean. I use really small copper wire to run up in the hole (small guage steel wire tend to be brittle and will break of in there). I have also blew compressed air up through the pee-hole. And make sure the rubber do-hicky that plugs the bail-o-matic is fairly tight to help it prime better.
