I'm looking at picking up a 2000 9.9 merc trolling motor and am wondering if there are some oils that produce less smoke/fumes than others? How about synthetics, can they be mixed leaner? Thanx!....Dan

no you cant mix synthetics leaner -
esso makes a good synthetic blend - i can confirm it's alot better than regular 2 stroke .
lucas oil - i'm thinking of trying - also a blend
castrol might make a blend as well
do see where i'm going ? use a blended oil as opposed to full synthetic unless your specific engine says to use full syn.
you might need to adjust your oil tank flow rate when going from regular oil to syn. blend and full syn. will just pee right thru .

Full synthetic (TC-W3 rated only!!) will give you the least smoke, Bandit. Most of it is biodegradable so it is also a lot cleaner.

Mix it exactly the same as fossil oil.

I have used and recommend Pennzoil full synthetic TC-W3.

Ditto on JB, I switched from Yamalube to Pennzoil 100% Synthetic Outboard motor oil several years ago and it smokes less, burns cleaner, no spark plug carbon/fouling. Walmart $27/gallon, it ain't cheap, but probably worth it in the long run. Good Luck!

Thanx for the tip! I just hate the thought of smelling all the fumes when trolling and the breeze is off the stern. I would really like a small 4 stroke but dang they are pricey!
